UX Case Study: Kitchen Measurement Guidance for Homeowners

My Role

As a UX Designer and Kitchen Designer, I leverage my hands-on experience with customers to identify pain points in the kitchen renovation process. My responsibilities include:

  • Conducting user research (interviews, surveys)

  • Defining problem statements and user personas

  • Designing user flows, wireframes, and prototypes

  • Improving the overall measurement and planning experience

Problem Statements

  • Homeowners struggle to accurately measure their kitchens for renovations.

  • There is no clear, user-friendly guidance available online.

  • Visiting stores multiple times for advice and measurements wastes users’ time.

  • Users may spend extra money unnecessarily due to a lack of online instructions.

Target Audience

  • Homeowners planning a kitchen remodel

  • Individuals with limited experience in measuring for renovations

  • Users who prefer convenient, digital solutions over repeated store visits

  • Quantitative: Customer surveys, online feedback forms, store appointment data

  • Qualitative: In-depth interviews with homeowners, shadowing customer appointments

  • 70% of homeowners make at least one major mistake when measuring

  • 46% said they felt stressed or confused by the process

  • 45% wished they could avoid multiple store visits just to ask how to measure

Usability Testing

Tasks Tested:
  • Prototype Tested

    • A mobile app feature that guides users step by step through measuring their kitchen.

    • Features included:

      • Visual measurement guide (illustrations & instructions).

      • Checklist of required measurements.

      • Virtual measuring tool (phone camera for AR measurement).

      • Option to upload/store measurements for design planning.

    Participants

    • 5 participants (2 first-time remodelers, 2 busy professionals, 1 repeat renovator).

    • Mix of budget-conscious and time-conscious personas.

    Tasks Given

    1. Use the app to measure cabinet width and ceiling height.

    2. Enter measurements into the app.

    3. Save and review measurements for a design

    4. Find measurement guide in appappointment.

Findings & Insights
  • Users want visual + interactive measurement guides

  • AR (Augmented Reality) tools increase accuracy and confidence

  • One-stop workflow reduces the need for extra store visits

The usability test results visualized

 

  • Success Rate Chart → Most tasks were completed successfully, but measuring ceiling height had a slightly lower success rate (80%).

  • Average Time on Task Chart → Ceiling height measurement also took the longest (3 minutes), while entering/saving and reviewing measurements were quicker.
